01 / MORE THAN MUSIC

A creative outlet.
Something to look forward to.

Deckstart Academy is a six-week DJ and radio programme for ages 12–16 in Milton Keynes, helping young people learn new skills, express themselves and create together through music. We start with the basics and give them time to practise.

A new interest

Turn an interest in music into something they can try for themselves. Your child will choose songs, use DJ equipment and learn to mix two tracks together.

Growing confidence

Introducing a song, asking a question or sharing an idea gives your child a chance to practise speaking up. Small steps and time to rehearse help them get started.

Connection

Music gives young people something to share. Working in pairs and teams, they can swap ideas, listen to each other and create a mix together.

02 / THE SIX-WEEK PROGRAMME

Six weeks.
One step at a time.

For young people: choose your tracks, learn to mix and create your own show. Here’s what you’ll try each week. No DJ or radio experience needed.

WEEK 01

Press play

Meet the group and get to know the DJ equipment. Learn how to use it safely, choose where a track starts and try a short introduction on the mic.

WEEK 02

Find the beat

Learn how to count beats and choose tracks that work together. Practise getting your next song ready and introducing it on the mic.

WEEK 03

Mix two songs

Learn to move smoothly from one track to the next. Explore the sound controls, listen to your mix and practise making adjustments.

WEEK 04

Create a short radio show

Plan a short radio segment with music and conversation. Practise introducing tracks, asking questions and presenting with a partner.

WEEK 05

Practise your mix

Work with a partner or team to plan your mix or radio segment. Rehearse, share feedback and prepare for the final showcase.

WEEK 06 / THE FINALE

Your final showcase

Share your DJ mix or radio segment in a friendly competition and showcase. Support the other teams and celebrate what you’ve learned.

03 / SOMETHING TO WORK TOWARDS

A chance to share
what they’ve learned.

The final week brings everything together in a friendly competition and showcase. Your child will practise with their team before sharing their music and mic skills. The focus is on taking part, supporting each other and celebrating progress.

WHY DECKSTART ACADEMY

Your sound
starts here.

Deckstart Academy brings DJing and radio presenting to young people aged 12–16 in Milton Keynes. We believe an interest in music can open the door to learning, self-expression and connection.

Our co-founder is a DJ and music producer active in the London scene who also presents on radio. That practical experience helps shape a programme where young people can learn to mix, use the mic and develop their own ideas.

Our first step is a six-week after-school pilot for ages 12–16, with time to learn from the beginning and create with others.

COMING SOON · AGES 13–17

Music production.
Your next creation.

We’re developing a separate music production pilot for young people aged 13–17 who want to explore how music is made and start creating their own.

Dates, session details and pricing will be announced when they’re confirmed. This is a future pilot, separate from our six-week DJ and radio programme for ages 12–16.

Got questions?
Start here.

Who is the first pilot for?

The first pilot is for young people aged 12–16, with enquiries and bookings handled by a parent or carer. Complete beginners are welcome.

How much does the six-week programme cost?

Pay £135 upfront for the full programme, or spread the cost across six weekly payments of £25 (£150 in total). Paying upfront saves £15. Both options cover the full six weeks; weekly payments are not drop-in bookings. Instalments are due on agreed dates. Missing a session does not automatically pause the plan. Payment dates and cancellation terms will be shared before bookings open.

Does my child need any DJ experience?

No. Your child can join without knowing anything about DJing. We’ll start with the basics and take it one step at a time.

Do we need to buy equipment?

The plan is to provide DJ and radio equipment during sessions, shared in small groups. Please wait for confirmed joining information before buying anything. We’ll explain what participants need to bring before booking.

What if my child is nervous about performing?

That’s OK. There’s time to practise with others before the final show. A parent or carer can talk to us about any worries or support needed before booking.

What happens if my child misses a session?

Please let us know if your child cannot attend. Their booking is for the full six-week programme, so missing a session does not automatically pause weekly instalments. If you need to cancel or discuss your circumstances, contact the organisers. The cancellation and refund terms will be shared before you book.

Will recordings be shared online?

Recordings remain private unless specific permissions and the necessary music rights allow sharing.

Will you offer music production?

Yes — a separate music production pilot for ages 13–17 is coming soon. Dates, session details and pricing are still to be confirmed. It is not included in the current six-week DJ and radio programme.

Will there be a group for ages 16–20?

After reviewing the first pilot, we hope to introduce a separate group for ages 16–20. It would speak directly to older young people and offer opportunities to develop their sound and presenting skills. This is a future plan: no sessions or dates are confirmed. Sixteen-year-olds are welcome in the current 12–16 pilot.

Can schools or youth groups get involved?

We welcome conversations about bringing DJing and radio skills to young people through schools and community groups. Choose the partnership option below to prepare an enquiry.

Who will run the sessions?

Deckstart Academy is co-led by a DJ and music producer active in the London scene who also presents on radio. We’ll share the full organiser and session leader information before booking opens, along with supervision and safeguarding arrangements.

When will the pilot run?

We’re planning six Tuesdays, 4–5:30 pm, starting in January 2027. This is provisional: the exact dates and venue will be confirmed before paid bookings open.

How do we book, and what safeguarding information is available?

Bookings are not open yet. Dates, venue, payment and cancellation terms, supervision and safeguarding arrangements will be shared before enrolment. Parents and carers should review these details before booking.

05 / YOUR FIRST STEP

Could this be
their next thing?

If your 12–16-year-old loves music and wants to try something new, Deckstart could be a place to start. Our first pilot is planned for January 2027. Booking and contact details are coming soon.

Parents, carers and schools: use the tool to save an enquiry draft for later. It does not send an enquiry, join a waiting list or reserve a place.
